Fire safety is something every family should think about, but it is especially important to help children understand what to do in an emergency. Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity to review your family’s safety plan, check your smoke alarms, and teach children simple steps that could help keep them safe.

At Kaiden’s Korner Childcare Services, we believe that creating a safe environment includes helping children learn important safety skills in age-appropriate ways.

Check Your Smoke Alarms

One of the easiest ways to improve fire safety at home is to make sure your smoke alarms are working properly.

Parents and caregivers should:

  • Test smoke alarms regularly.

  • Replace batteries when needed.

  • Replace smoke alarms according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

  • Make sure there is a working smoke alarm on every level of the home and near sleeping areas.

  • Never remove a smoke alarm because of frequent false alarms.

A working smoke alarm can provide an important warning and give families valuable time to get outside safely.

Create a Family Fire Escape Plan

Children may become frightened or confused during an emergency, so practicing ahead of time can make a big difference.

Create a simple fire escape plan that includes:

Two ways out: Identify two possible exits from each room when possible.

A meeting place: Choose a safe location outside where everyone should meet.

Practice: Have your family practice the escape plan so children become familiar with what to do.

Stay outside: Teach children never to go back inside a burning building.

Teach Children Important Fire Safety Rules

Fire safety lessons don't have to be complicated. Young children can learn simple rules such as:

  • Don't play with matches, lighters, or candles.

  • Stop, drop, and roll if clothing catches fire.

  • Crawl low if there is smoke.

  • Never hide during a fire.

  • Listen to trusted adults and emergency responders.

  • Call 911 once safely outside, when appropriate.

Keep lessons calm and age-appropriate. The goal is to help children feel prepared—not frightened.

Make Fire Safety Part of Your Routine

Fire safety shouldn't only be discussed once a year. Take a few minutes throughout the year to check smoke alarms, review your escape plan, and practice with your children.

A little preparation can help your family feel more confident about what to do if an emergency occurs.

Safety Starts With Preparation

Fire Prevention Week is a great reminder that small safety steps can make a big difference. From checking smoke alarms to practicing an escape plan, families can work together to create safer homes and help children develop important safety habits.

At Kaiden’s Korner, we are committed to providing children with a safe, caring environment where they can learn, grow, and build confidence every day.
